Sandpaper Letters a, m, b with a three-year-old girl.
The letters are introduced by the sound they make. They are traced in the direction in which they will later be written so as each child develops writing abilities correct penmanship will already be natural.
This lesson shows the first two periods, introduction (“This is ___”), and discrimination (“Show me ___”). When these have been mastered this little girl will be able to do the third period (“What is this?”) of Montessori’s Three Period Lesson.
